Statement

My work focuses on the experience of loss expressed in cloth and stitch. I often use domestic linens as they are ever present in our lives as we spend many hours looking after them – washing, ironing and folding in an ever-repeating cycle. They are witnesses to life events and are the keepers of our memories.

In my work I tear, mend, reconstruct, piece them together and layer them over each other, each action a metaphor for life experience. Much of my work uses fragments torn from a bigger whole, suggesting the fragments of memory which remain when others are forgotten. I seek to make a connection with any unresolved sense of loss in the viewer and in that connection enable a progression of their work of mourning towards resolution.

Memory of the past is explored by printing old letters from people I have known and then covering with paint, plaster, chalk, ash and stitch, then revealing some whilst others remain hidden.

The layering of materials and techniques creates complex accretions, but they are controlled carefully, each layer deployed … as a historian might layer up historical evidence. Exhibition News

My work ‘Codex’ is being exhibited in ‘Stories in Cloth: Communicating Through Textiles’ at the La Jolla Historical Society, in partnership with the Visions Museum of Textile Art, California, USA. 

The show explores how textiles from around the world and throughout history have been used to communicate stories, identity, and shared experience. Focusing on three key themes—storytelling, activism and resistance, and cultural expression—the exhibition highlights historic and contemporary works, collaborations with local artists, and loans from institutions and artists. Stories in Cloth celebrates textiles as powerful tools for connection, creativity, and cultural expression.

‘Passed down, passed on and let go’ has been selected to be in the World of Threads Festival 2026-27 in Oakville, Ontario, Canada. I’m excited to be among the 192 artists from 22 countries who will be showing their work.
